Follow-up Comment #3, bug #18442 (project mypaint):
Scons seems to do a perfectly good job of installing the icons tree under
$prefix/share. I don't see a problem there.
Though if we do switch, can we have a way of specifying (in autotools
terminology) $exec_prefix as well as $prefix? This will help distributors
quite a bit.
