Which version it this? 0.9.2 hasn't been released yet. What do you mean by
"if you've been sketching for a while"? Would it matter if File→New were
invoked if you haven't been sketching for a while (IMO it shouldn't).
In current git (52ee730), here's something weird that hints that we may be
doing something wrong when assigning numbers:
* start mypaint
* make a lot of extra layers
* press Ctrl+N (or launch New from the File menu)
* press it lots of times
* watch at the number of the new layer changes unpredictably
* doesn't ever seem to reset to "Untitled layer #1"
Automatically naming layers is probably outside the scope of this bug report.
