Actually, belay that. Ignore this report: I've just run a git-bisect testing
sequence from 2dc0c4294d to cf621091c, which resulted in me running a subset
of the --clean commands in forwards change order and converging on cf621091c,
at which point the problem disappeared in cf621091c :) Clearly the problem
would go away with a clean build tree as well.
