Details:

I'm using MyPayint on Windows 7 with an Intuos 3 tablet with the latest
drivers for it.

Steps:

- Start up MyPaint;
- Choose either of the brushes in the summary (I've not installed additional
ones yet, so you chould easily find them) and the CDconcept/eraser for
erasing;
- Start drawing and switch between eraser and brush normally, change some
parameters from the * menu at the top as well;
- Check something on your browser, which will take focus (I use Chrome);
- When going back to Mypaint, go straight to erasing (with the eraser on the
pen), don't start with the drawing tip of the pen.

Results:

9 times out of 10 I wasn't able to erase, the eraser would function like the
brush or pencil I had selected at the time. I had that happen with another
eraser as well, but I don't remember it's name - I do believe the brush and
pen selected at the moment are irrelevant to reproduce it.

The only time I didn't manage to reproduce this was when I tried straight
after restarting MyPaint and I simply started drawing, checked Chrome and then
went back following my steps (minus the changing brush size and opacity) to
try and give a reliable repro.
When I then kept drawing thinking it might have been a fluke and changed
brush, but not the eraser, it happened again.

Setting the eraser end of the tablet pen back to an eraser tool usually works,
but in one case MyPaint was just refusing to cooperate and whichever tool I
set for the eraser would be fixed on the pen as well, forcing me to restart
it, which solved the problem.

Sorry, I can't seem to give you more exact steps than this, but if there's
some tool that I can run to help you find out why this happens, please let me
know.

Thanks in advance for any input!
