Hi Martin,
:)
As I receive RSS from Git , I tested your experimental branch this
morning ( http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6950/selection001l.jpg
<http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6950/selection001l.jpg>
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/9268/selection001pe.png ). Thanks for
creating this *.ogv , this is also really good for people who can't
build on the list.
I was really surprised to see it 'working ' ; the brush coping all the
layer stack to apply the blending mode ( even if I knew you you wanted
this concept ). This is also the first time I saw a feature like this
real time working on a painting application.
For sure, here I really like the blending mode applyied to the brush
this way ( I use layer as history , and the eraser as an 'undo' to the
previous layer , so I'm fine with this design ) .
I asked about 'layer blending modes' because I thought the concept you
told for 'brush blending modes' was too difficult to make it work before
a 1.0 release. And 'layer blending mode' already works on a Git branch
( that's why I used the term ' low hanging fruit' ) .
As feature, I'm interrested by both (layer + brush bledning mode ) to
be honnest.
About the 'overlay' blending mode ; I know I became totally unfamiliar
with a real one 'overlay' as you coded.
The one I often use is the 'overlay' mode of Gimp , and because it's a
bug ( https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162395 ) a duplicate
'soft light' ; I don't know now how really feel like a real 'overlay'
one anymore ; "soft light" is an inversed 'overlay blending mode'.
Having fianlly a real overlay is cool because it's a popular one digital
painting world, and I want to test it too.
So now, how many blending modes are you thinking for Mypaint ? / or
witch ones ? maybe it's better to rename or change them. Here I can't
propose as I don't have enought vocabulary for being correct with
english. I can only submit this mini descriptions , to maybe can inspire
the 'tooltip text over help' :
- Multiply : Glazing , make brush like ink transparent , colored gel
lens , markers ink , or simply for shading in general ...etc...
- Screen : Light , make the brush as working with light on canvas, good
for halo , athmosphéric effect ( screen )
- Overlay and Softlight : witch does Multiply and Screen depending the
active colors value ;
- Color : witch only change the color value, to colorise a B&w picture,
or change a color on a drawing. ( but not as Gimp does, one who don't
kill the values under ; like "Color HSY" of Krita )
I also like 'Dodge' for special Fx ; you can with a dark red paint till
obtaining red / orange then bright yellow ; ideal for fire/light and
other works.
Thanks for your time on coding this yesterday.

We need to release what we have now before we start on such.
From a user POV , the current new shining GUI + the addition of a
feature like layer blending ( if it's a low-hanging fruit ; I saw it
on Jonnor branch, or more recently on Sygetch branch
http://twitpic.com/6eepl1 ) could be a very good 1.0 release for
Mypaint.
You know that I (as a user) would prefer brush modes (which does not exclude
that we have layer modes, too). I would should up about this argument that
I have made for years now, but I finally have a working prototype :-)
Demo video: http://maxy.homeip.net/misc/blend_modes4.ogv
You can try it on my blend_modes4 branch.
I would be interested how you think this works in terms of workflow. The
blending mode itself (overlay) may not be ideal, and can be eaily changed or
improved later, but not the fact that it works incremental.
