@Till: ofcourse, you should be able to remove individual buttons, that's why I
want it customizable.

As for people messing oup the configuration, there need just be a restore to
default function
And if we follow Davids suggestion of putting those options in the preference
panel, then there's even less chance of messing up,imo.

@David: agreed on putting the options in the preferences etc..

For the blending mode: might be difficult for icons ,but as long as there is an
option to have an icon I don't mind a text drop down as you proposed.

I like the brush alpha lock because it remains active no matter what layer I
select.
With Layer Alpha lock I find I need to activate and deactivate more than I like
.
It's a great way having an alpha lock on any active layer without pressing too
much buttons. It's kind of an 'lock all alpha for all layers' mode ,which I use
a lot.

Layer lock therefore doesn't really appeal to me,because I rarely need the
layers to remember that they need to be locked (on a layer basis).

---------everything below here is nothing to do with mypaint toolbar mockup I'm
sorry,so stop reading if you don't want to be bothered with another
request/idea---------

But still I also would like layer alpha lock, it would be great to have for
those layers that do need to be locked every time.

But I would like it for a bit more outlandish feature as well.

I would like ,if I activate alpha locks on different layers they each ADD to
the global alpha lock .
For example: Skin Layer ; clothes layers -> activate alpha on both => now you
have an alpha that takes note of both of these and you can shadow both of them
on a new layer.

=>The alpha lock is the two locked layers combined.

I can't count the number of times I could have used such a feature.

----------end of my silly request)--------------

But if we ever do get Layer lock (but without getting rid of brush lock please
^^):
Can we please put the lock Icon ON the layer itself? (like krita) and not above
or under the layers,on the layer panel? (like gimp)
I get really annoyed when i need to select each layer and change alpha one at a
time,reselecting every time.

kind regards

(Sorry for the length ^^)

Subject: Re: [Mypaint-discuss] Mypaint toolbar mockup proposition ( and new
icons )

Hi Till , Hi Bol,

For going to the point : I agree with Bol proposition and feedbacks, and also
Till 's notes. I will work to update my mockup soon :)
I think in order to keep the
default interface simple ( to not affraid beginners ) and compatible
with 1024px large , most of optional 'extra tools' could be activated
via the preferences panel. This place would be better than the actual
right-click on the toolbar , in my opinion. Here would be a new 'Toolbar' tab :

----------------------------------------
Toolbar preferences :

☑ Show toolbar
☐ Show top menu

☑ File handling
....... ☐ Scrap navigation
☑ Undo and Redo
☑ Editing modes
....... ☐ Circle and Sequence of lines
☑ Blend Mode
....... ☐ extras

☑ View
....... ☐ extras
☑ Subwindows

----------------------------------------

Details :

- True, the tracing tools ( continuous line
and circle ) should be also reachable in the toolbar if a user want it.
I agree with Bol's point. On my mockup, they are on the drop down menu.
It add another step/click in the process. I never use here the
continuous line , and rarely the circle. That why I hidden them in the
drop down menu. I still think default should hide them. And let user discover
them with the time.
If user require it for a work with speed access, he can 'activate' them via the
preferences panel.

- For the blending mode , I'm convinced it's
hard as hell to make good icons of brush blending mode ; the current icons,
show a
tool ( a brush ) and a sort of ink. It's confusing. I'm also convinced the
current way to
have a "alpha locking" in Mypaint is wrong. it shouldn't be brush based ; but
this
lock should be per layer based . ( ex : I lock alpha on the layer , then I
can use the brush preset I want to paint the shape locked , btw I like the
feedback with brush outliner shape on canvas ). But implementing the per layer
via GUI would
represent for sure a big change for developers. And to go to a friendly
and easy workaround solution, I would say I will add back to my mockup
the "alpha locking" icon in the 'ink' category next to the eraser (
redesigning the icon,
to not display a brush tool on it ).
Here I'm waiting a lot for 'multiply' blending mode, or 'glazing' .

2012/9/25 Till Hartmann <[email protected]>

Looks like a reasonable default to me.

Now that I look at your proposal, it strikes me that the canvas setup is indeed
scattered to many different menus (e.g. enabling/disabling the frame is in the
file menu, whereas editing frame options is in the edit menu [and besides is
actually called "Edit Frame" which is weird because "Edit" is already the
menu's title]) so I'd say reorganizing features regarding the canvas into a
single canvas setup sounds like a good idea to me.

I've never noticed that there are no separators between any of the icons on the
toolbar which makes it difficult to navigate them.

As to Bol's (or Bib's? ;) ) suggestion that users may want to customize toolbar
layout... hm. I know there are lots of applications which allow that BUT it
makes it way more difficult to help people who (accidentally?) jumbled up their
toolbar setup; or to discuss some workflow with other people who simply have
got a different toolbar setup.

I'm more of the minimalist myself. I've started using mypaint when it didn't
have that many options and toolbar buttons and to choose between options that
were there I'd use the keyboard anyway. What I intend to say is that if there's
to be any toolbar-customization-option it should also be possible to remove
icons from the toolbar ;)
