I now ran tests/test_performance.py. On my machine around 13% speed-up can
be seen in some of the UI-based painting tests:

layerpaint_zoomed_out_5x: 1.127923 (13%)
paint_zoomed_out_5x: 1.137974 (14%)

Martin reported similar results*:
layerpaint_zoomed_out_5x: 1.162948 (16%)
paint_zoomed_out_5x: 1.176533 (18%)

Results for the rest of the tests were unaltered (< +/- 2%).
