It doesn't belong in MySQL. By that logic, monolithic kernels are a Good Thing.

It doesn't belong in MySQL. Never has, never will. But it's trivial to write a thin
layer that will add XML to the output stream. Perl, PHP, Escapade, even a shell
script...
