I'm not sure, but this is really strange for me. I suggest you 

to reproduce the problem on the latest release (4.1.9 now). Use

official binaries. Also, you may try mysqld-max. Work with

backups of your table. Dump it and then import to the 

new instance of MySQL (4.1.9 or 4.1.9-max). Create a new

table from existing one with insert ... select statement.

Try to insert rows in a new table.
