  I will add to the comments above. I had to set the owner
  and group to mysql as per my redhat setup.

  More problems tho:
  ==================
  When invoking mysql, I get the following error message:
  """
  Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket at
  'var/lib/run/mysql/mysql.sock'
  """

  hmm! mysql.sock was created at var/lib/mysql.
  owner=mysql, permissions=777
  So again, is there paths/permissions problems?
  The following is in /etc/my.cnf
  ----------------------------------------------
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib

[safe_mysqld]
err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
-------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your help so far.
Further support greatly appeciated. :-)

Further pointers to docs invited!

Regards
Tim
