Is mysql_escape_string() in CAPI of My Sql working?

Hi,
I want to use mysql_escape_string(0 to store the File
Names with back slash character('\').

Unless I enter \\ in the File name it is not taking
in.
Will the function automatically add the additional 
'\'
required.
What is the exact role of this function?
