Is there a tool, preferably open source, that can read
database schema scripts (for lack of a better term) or

I've been working with MySQL Workbench, and if I used it as a
dumb device it was OK. As soon as I started adding foreign
keys - BLOOM! BLOOM! - lines and labels everywhere. The
schema code it generated need a lot of editing as well.
This is expecting rather a lot, but thought I would ask.

You've always been the one to get on the new ideas, so I'll ask you this
- any chance of MySQL releasing a similar tool in the future?
If something similar can match the quality and functionality of MySQL's
Administration and Query Browser software, I can definitely see this
being a great product.
