I believe you would have been ok with stop slave and reset master.

i ended up doing this - it seems to have worked
fine
STOP SLAVE;
SHOW SLAVE STATUS;
CHANGE MASTER TO
MASTER_HOST='',
MASTER_PORT=0,
MASTER_USER='',
MASTER_PASSWORD='';
RESET MASTER;
