Initially her was convinced that MySQL as a division of Sun would really benefit the future of MySQL [1]. Obviously his relationship with Sun changed "a bit" later on. It shows that he really cared about MySQL and in his own way, he still cares for MySQL.
This has nothing to do with earning money or selling things. People sell things to companies or other people and think that the new owner will be good for the product they cared about. Sometimes it doesn't work out like you think it would and to me it shows that someone still cares about that product if they try to do something about it.
I am not talking about agreeing with mr. Widenius or not; that is a different discussion.
