Figured it out.  mySQL wasn't down and it's been functioning well for weeks
because it stores the information for my forums.  Come to find out it was
FreeBSD.  Our ISP rebooted the server today to patch something, once it came
back up, everything was working as it normally should.  It was just weird
that mySQL worked fine when doing selects and inserts.  We had even
restarted the mySQL service previously with no change to the error below.
Anyway, it's all working now.  Thanks for the help and sorry to have
bothered anyone.
