Don't think its permissions, since I had a similar process which ran fine, but I
had to change the schema to use the last insert id for other reasons and that's
when the problems started...

Well, I run MySQL in a DOS box not as a service. Would running it as as service
help? If so, why?

Okay, table_cache increased from 64 to 256...

Minimum free on a drive it 400Mb, the drive which the MySQL data dir his on has
close to 4GB free...

I'm trying again with the new table_cache setting, I'll let you know how I get
on...
