Hi, It happens to me, just make sure you are not using any symbolic link, when I try to use symbolic link to mysql 4.0.0-aplha and it won't work. In my case, I just do "mv mysql-4.0.0-alpha-pc-linux-gnu-i686 mysql" and it works.
