I am sure Paul would not plug his own book,  but I will it would help
to have a practical example to follow,  so I recommend the book
"MySQL" by Paul Dubois,  published by New Riders (check Amazon.com or
your local computer book store).
This will help you with error checking.  I know it helped me!
