NOT a good idea.

I think you may have ended up deleting more than you wanted. There was a
MySQL file or directory in the PHP distribution, and, I think, in at least
one more place, might have been Apache. If you want to use MySQL with PHP,
you may need to re-install PHP (and Apache maybe?) as well. Hopefully, I'll
have enough time to actually try an install from source tonight, so I can
tell you where things went.

I mentioned this to you off list, I'll mention it again for people who might
search the archives. (Does anyone?)

When you forget your password, see the manual about the
"--skip-grant-tables" option. And don't forget to flush the buffers when
you're done.
