An update to my earlier post: the problem is NOT fixed in v4.0.1. Both in 
v3.23 and v4.0.1 it only shows up in specific circumstances. But given the 
reactions to my post, nobody seems to care about that anyway ;-)
I've opened a ticket (#734) about this problem with MySQL support.
