Unfortunately OpenSSL support in 4.0.3 is broken - - sorry about that. As a workaround, you can try compiling MySQL with adding CFLAGS="-DEXTRA_DEBUG", this will magically work around the bug. It seems like some critical code is inside an "#ifndef DBUG_OFF" somewhere... We are currently investigating this problem and it will hopefully be fixed for 4.0.4.
