Not quite true; bonding is possible on Linux, so you could technically install two network cards and double your transfer speed (or three to triple, and so on and so forth). I don't know if its Linux supported, but DLink has a quad-connector NIC that does just this (bonds 4 network connections into one) for (at least) Windows users.
