I saw the same behaviour when the mysql database did not exist in the directory listed by "Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql". If the RPM installation put the db somewhere besides "/var/lib/mysql" you may need to edit the /etc/my.cnf file to specify the correct location of the mysql database directory.
