The error you're reporting is exactly what I get under Windows when the server is down. To start the server: c:\mysql\bin\winmysqladmin.exe You can also try: c:\mysql\bin\mysqld.exe Then start c:\mysql\bin\mysql.exe, and you should get a connection.
