Looks like your mysql-daemon doesn't run at all or/and isn't
installed in the directory your client expected it.
In order to help you there's some information needed:
Which operating system do you use  ?
How did you install (e.g. rpm) ?
Which version of mysql did you try to install ?
How did you start the server ? 

If you don't know the answers to some of that questions , 
describe what you did.
