I'm having trouble getting MySQL running on a RedHat Linux 7.1 machine.Did you run mysql_install_db script?
The log file complains that "host.MYD" is missing; I don't see mention
of this file in the documentation, and it's not on my computer anywhere.
OK, thanks. Also, the mysql.sock file is not present, and I don't know how tomysql.sock is created when MySQL server is started.
create it -- I assume it'll take more than a 'touch'!
Anyway, the problem is now fixed, thanks mostly to the help of Dave Christensen. There were two things wrong: my.cnf was pointing to an incorrect data directory, and the group and owner of all of my data files was root instead of mysql. I have no idea of why, which is troubling. In any case, things seem to be working better now. At least, the server isn't crashing; that's a start!
