Fair enough. I did FLUSH PRIVILEGES whenever I changed the user table. It
seemed to me that the GRANT SQL didn't require a FLUSH, but I didn't use
it to change passwords, just to add new users.

However, that doesn't explain why logging in to mysql monitor went funny.
I mean, the password I enter is the same, when I put it on the command
line, or when I wait for mysql to prompt for the password. But it only
works when I enter it on the command line.
