I recently posted an email about 'Inoperable Symbolic Links in Win2K Pro ' and I subsequently subscribed to the belief that MySQL would fail when installed in a location that was different that the default location. I tried a myriad of things to get the database system to function correctly. I could not get it to work when it was installed as a service or when the data was located somewhere different that drive c.
The problem here is that the default service installation is for the Local system account and when the drive is mapped the system account can't to be authenticated against a mapped driver.
If the above your case, then you need to change the local system account for an user account, this account should have the privileges granted on the mapped driver.
If your disk driver is installed on the same computer, then verify if for the local system account is enabled the privileges over it.
