I'm running 1Gb on my normal desktop with XP pro...it's sufficient, but just, if you've got swap disabled. Still gets bogged down sometimes, almost like it's trying to swap and getting frustrated because it's not allowed to. I'd be happier with 1.5 or even 2Gb of nice hot DDR333...these days, ram is cheap enough you can really load up a machine and not hurt too much.
