thanks for your answer, but max_connections is set high enough (double the number of the currently used threads). I think the error would be "Too many connections", wouldn't it?

I'm having problems with a 4.0.18 MySQL Server. Since this afternoon I get the error "Can't create a new thread (errno 11)" when MySQL has forked about 200-300 threads.
What does it mean? I'm not running out of RAM or disk space.
