Dave, I believe the suggestion is for you to go into your the setup on your frontend and change the playback profile. There should be a number of options, one of which is hopefully VDPAU normal (where VDPAU refers to the name of the Linux driver for recent Nvidia-based video hardware).

Any attempt to run a recorded video from my 10.4 backend (updated to 23.1) causes X to crash and GDM to present me with a fresh login. This system appears to work fine with 10.4.
