after playing a ripped dvd with ac3 soundtrack spdif output is muted

Bug description:
After I play back a video that I ripped from dvd with an AC3
soundtrack, the spdif output from my sound card is disabled or muted
for non-ac3 media such as live tv or recorded shows. I cannot restore
normal behavior of the digital audio output of my sound card. AC3
passthrough continues to work fine for audio that has an ac3 track.
Analog out also works.
I have an Audigy 2 Platinum
I am using AC3 passthrough
