I can confirm this still an issue. I am using 2:0.24.0+fixes.20110514
.8dd67eb-0ubuntu0mythbuntu1.
The two symptoms are:
1. When switching songs and the visualizations are running the cover art
flickers past, staying on the screen for only a fraction of a second.
They are there however.
2. Pressing info ("i") to display the song information while the
visualizer results in the same situation. The popup box only stays on
the screen for a fraction of a second as well making it unuseable.
This feature is greatly missed. I use mythmusic exclusively and like
the original poster this functionality just stopped working ages ago.

Bug description:
When using full screen visualizations in MythMusic, on song change the
album cover disappears almost immediately even though it is set to
show for 4 seconds. Using the visualization Stereoscope, the cover
displays for the full time period between songs.
