Actually, this doesn't make sense at all, at least in my area. The subchannels are not really related.

I have 3 channels with subchannels:

Channel 2 has 2-1 WGBH (SD) and 2-2 (PBS-HD national feed)
Channel 5 has 5-1 (normal ABC HD) and 5-2 (ABC World News SD)
Channel 44 has 44-1 (normal WGBX SD), 44-2 (WGBH World--NOVA, Bill Moyers, etc), 44-3 (WGBH Create--This Old House, Antiques Roadshow, etc), and 44-4 (WGBH Kids--Arthur, Clifford, etc.)

Tell me why my niece should have to tune to a station showing "Magic Moments: The Best of 50's Pop" in order to then switch to watching "Cyberchase"?

Isaac has asserted that it's a "one-line" change to allow hyphen in the channel numbers. I guess we (I) will just have to search harder to find that line :-)
