The Quicktime framework has an API for recording video and I think it has been there since earlier Mac OS versions that had support for TV tuners. If we could make a few changes to the mac version so that quicktime handled everything instead of v4l the backend should work (I guess I just made it sound easy, but I realize that it will not be).
