I was surprised to see how much performance difference there now is on
video playback between debug and release due to -O, and with that the case
you're not going to see users running debug by default in any event.
(Could, I suppose, have a debug mode that optimizes only the video
playback, OSD and other high-CPU code, which are all that really need it
anyway.)
From a developer point of view, having a half way house like this would be really useful. I would like to run under gdb more often, but at the moment it's a kind of switch between debug and back to live. My P2.8 just doesn't seem to have enough horsepower to run normally under debug (at least not with pthreads, it's better with NPTL).
I wouldn't mind even just a few pointers to running, say ffmpeg with more optimised settings and everything else full debug, since this would probably be sufficient for me..
