I believe the mechanism you describe is fundamentally flawed; automating a stable tag defeats the purpose. A stable tag isn't as useful as a stable branch really, right now there are release tags (though there is no guarantee that you can ever get back to one) which you could use as a stable tag with all the same headaches (when is head considered stable by everyone when it isn't right before a release?). -- Anduin Withers
