I've just bit the bullet and upgraded my Knoppmyth R5A12 system to latest CVS, hoping to get XVMC working somewhat better. Everything went fine, until I finally tried XVMC, and it failed rather spectacularly when going to play a program (though the previews seem to work, do those use xvmc?)
Here's the relevant playback log:
Strangely enough, I just did a CVS compile from latest CVS this evening, and XvMC works flawlessly for me, for the first time ever. I had to select 'extra audio buffers' which got rid of the HUGE stuttering problem I had before. If I leave Bob de-interlace on, I get some video strangeness, almost like frames get displayed out of order. If I turn it off, no problems whatsoever. The OSD is still black and white, but I actually like it better that way.
