I'm finding 7174 quite stable except I am also seeing the prebuffering pauses on HDTV. Is this really likely to be a Nvidia driver issue?

You're probably right.
Have you tried downgrading to 6629?
I'm curious because I'm experiencing the exact same issue with occasional HD stuttering usually fixed by exiting and reentering live TV.
