I did have a 10 minute power safe enabled on my drives, and that may be
the cause of this whole thread discussion..  Powering down the drives
and back up may have caused my drive to go out so soon... I've since
discontinued power save.

That could be.
I don't powerdown my main drive that is used for the system and
primary recordings. I powerdown the secondary disks that just house
old recordings I want to keep. These powerdown after a half our of
use and only power up when I want to watch a recording which is
not so often.
