I've noticed that the biggest hit on the database is all the calls made by the scheduler. This is also what you are seeing. There is no 5 minute fix for this. Will look into this when I get a chance. (I'm thinking new scheduler call backgroundReschedule) Perhaps you could try running mysql at a lower priority, that way the scheduler queries should take longer, but it's not a long term solution....
