That's doing the same as the existing code--it strips off all
subdirectory information ( i.e. takes the filename at the end of the path
only)--right?

correct, did I misinterpret what was wanted?
I forgot that in Qstring it returns an index value so you'll want to add 1 to the findrev
retval = pathname.mid(pathname.findRev( '/')+1);
