Instead I got a twisted and yellow tinted flickering mess, but still kinda readable, at least in the center portion of the screen, along with a rather loud high pitched whine. Suffice to say I didn't leave it on very long.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I get a similar phenomenon from the TV before X fires up. It "sometimes sorta almost" syncs to the 2x rate of VGA. When X fires up, it locks on and I see a beautiful NVidia logo in all its flickery 480i glory... :)
