Agreed. I think you'd also have to do the stderr /dev/null redirection for whiches that send error messages there. I like things compact and elegant and putting in hacks for brain dead utilities bugs me. It's not such a big deal though.

I guess my approach would be to have configure detect a broken which and define a shell function to replace it if that's possible. I'm just preparing for a trip out of town so my time is limited but in a few days I'll see if that can be made to work.
