Thanks to all of you for your kind and informative replies! I have to say
that this is the most polite and helpful newsgroup that I subscribe to.
Kudos to all of you! Great software, and Great Support!

Anyways, I've decided to use Jarod's step-by-step guide on wilsonet.com ...
I would like to go through the complete install experience. Although it
will take longer to do, at least I'll learn more about Linux along the way.
I would get started right now, but I'm currently 1500 miles away from home
(and all my spare computer equipment) caring for my Mother who is ill. So I
can't start on things until I get back home (which may be a month or more
depending on how things work out here). But on the plus side, I'll have
pleanty of time to read the guides in the mean time. So by the time I start
putting things together I should have a pretty good idea of what I need to
do.

One more question -- I *think* I read somewhere that people have
successfully built an IR blaster and a config file for 'irsend'(?) to
control a dish network DishPlayer 7100/7200 receiver... Is that true? I
know that the DP uses either a different carrier frequency or different
wavelength IR LED, because very few 'universal' remotes work with it, even the
'learning' ones don't work properly because of this. If I have to, I can
build something like Travis' suggestion of a parallel-port 'hack' to control
the receiver. (I'm fluent in digital electronics too...)

Thanks again... I'll be lurking until I can get back home to my hardware to
start building my computer hardware again, but thanks again! ;-)

Hi guys,

First of all, please have mercy on this MythTV Newbie...

I'm a happy DishPlayer 7100 PVR user and I read a blurb about 'MythTV'
in
the dishrip group and thought I'd check it out. All I can say is
"WOW!"...
It's amazing what you guys have collectively put together!!! So, I'd
love
to get started building a system, and as chance would have it, I've
already
got most (if not all) of the hardware necessary to build a MythTV system.
(Hauppauge PVR-350, Athlon XP 1800, 512 ram, Matrox Millennium G450 Dual
Head, 120GB HDD, DVD +/-R/RW, etc.)

But here's where the trouble comes in -- I've got very little
experience
with Linux to date. I'm highly technical, and quite proficient on PC
Hardware and the Windows side of the world, but very little exposure to
Linux. I'm no stranger to command-line interfaces (I work with mainframe
systems that are all 'cli' based), so that aspect of Linux doesn't bother
me
at all. It's just all the 'little' Linux-specific commands and stuff
that
you're supposed to know before attempting something like this that
bothers
me...

With that in mind, is it even possible for me to put this together
without
having to have somebody 'hold my hand' through the whole process??? Is
it a
really complex procedure (that it seems to be), or is there a simple
step-by-step guide of what to do that even a monkey could follow? (Not
that
I'm a monkey, but when it comes to Unix/Linux, my exposure has only been
about 99% just using it, from a shell prompt, and not
installing/compiling/configuring it.) Are there any ISO images that I
can
download to get started?

I guessing that many of my questions may be answered in the archives,
but
I haven't been able to find out how to search them like I can do with the
Yahoo or Google news groups... Is there one?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for your replies... You
can email me directly if you want (my address is indeed real).

Welcome! It's great to have new people.

I would recommend Jarod's guide at http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php

It takes you through, step by step, what you need to do. KnoppMyth is
also a good option, but if you don't have any Linux experience, I
think that Jarod's guide is probably a better place to start.

There is an excellent search interface to this mailing list. It is at
the following address:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/

I'd also recommend looking through the Myth documentation if you
haven't already. It's at http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO.html

Let us know if you have other questions.

Lane
