Well yes, technically all controllers are software, as the software
is just set in silicon.

However, with software raid, all the disks need not be connected
to the same controller, need not be all the same type (you can mix sata, ata,
scsi, what-ever), and the raid gets faster as your CPU is upgraded.

Hardware raid is the same speed (or slow) next year in your new server
as it is today in your old one.
