I also have a pcHDTV. I use an audio authority to transcode VGA to component on my frontend in the living room. I have an Xbox as a frontend in the bedroom, and while nice for a frontend, it cannot even begin to decode the HDTV stream.
my 2.5Ghz living room PC with 512Mb RAM and Geforce 4 MX 4000 is about 90% CPU to watch a HD stream. The Xbox is something like 733Mhz, and it completely chokes when a HD stream is selected. So, although it is true the xbox can output 1080i desktop and play HD games, it certainly cannot decode a HDTV stream. Lastly: my Geforce4MX 4000 produces unsatisfactory 1080i, so I am using 480p (which actually looks very very nice with HD). But, I am planning on trying the 5200 or higher to see if they scale things to 1080i better.
