John,

What I want is both screens to display the same contents... I don't want to have one virtual area with the TV being at the right or bottom of the monitor.

The thing is, with the nVidia card (which has TV out too, even though I believe the PVR-350 has better quality) it works this way from the BIOS messages until the X server is started. As soon as this happens, the TV goes black (until I have "ConnectedMonitor TV" in the config file, in this case the monitor goes black).

Surely there is a way to tell the X server that there are two devices to use for display?

Thanks.

Yes is the short answer. There are several ways

1) Run dual screen
Pros - relatively simple to make work
Cons - The 350's X display is tied to the desktop one so logging out
restarts the x server for the 350 as well as the desktop. The desktop mouse
can move off the side and onto the tv's display

2) Run 2 x servers
Pros - they are independent so the 350 one can run forever and
doesn't really need a window manager
Cons - You really need to disable the Virtual Terminal switching
since by default only the one connected to the active virtual terminal will
run. There are patches around for X to do this but that means that you have
to find them, apply them and then rebuild the server.

I do have the patches on my machine and I am hoping to write up how to make
the second option work since several people have asked how to do it.

Subject: [mythtv-users] X output to both TV and monitor

Hi,

Is it possible to use a PVR-350 in X to output to TV and, at the same
time, use a regular video card (an Nvidia FX 5200 to be exact) to output
to monitor? I'd like to use both at the same time... would be really
useful to me. Configuring myth using the TV can't be good for the eyes...

Thanks.
