Speaking as one who has dealt with his share of nvidia problems, the mx 4000 (no fan, pretty cheep right now) works fine with the newer kernels only if you use a hacked driver. You can get more info from my previous post on the subject, including the website for the driver. I've heard that other "older" nvidia cards have the same issue with the newer driver (ie, pre 5200). If you can find a 5200 without a fan, that would be my recommendation as a starting point. If noise is no issue, go with your budget...

be warned that while the 5200's do come fanless they get incredibly hot when they are.. not effecting the card much but the overall temp of your case will raise considerably

also the 5200 has horrible 3d performance (slower then the gf4mx) if you plan on doing any opengl stuff

otoh i hear the quality of the 5200's tv-out is better..
