Sounds like you're using msp3400 instead of msp3400-ivtv...

That did the trick -- I renamed /lib/modules/blah/blah/blah/msp3400.o to msp3400.o-orig and .../msp3400-ivtv.o to msp3400.o and audio seems to be reliable now. Thanks for the pointer.
